Managing & minimizing in-house attrition in staffing industry...

Had the opportunity to attend the LinkedIn Staffing Entrepreneurs round-table session yesterday. In this insightful discussion, among the many things discussed was the very moot query - How do we manage & minimize in-house attrition?

To a lay person, it may seem like an irrelevant point. We are after all; staffing solution providers so to lay people it is ludicrous to think that we ourselves may be facing staffing problems. However, attrition is a problem for us just as much as for the clients/corporate entities that we service.  A few views put forth at the discussion to manage this attrition were:

-         Drive a process oriented organization

-         Keep a transparent system

-         Believe in the company vision and keep that alive

-         Engage your employees & manpower on a daily basis etc.

However, I believe that ultimately what it actually boils down to is the basic fact that you need to humanize your organization.  Treat your firm not like a corporate entity but like a human entity. Apart from a vision also invest in a cultural synergy. Create avenues to be emotionally and not just intellectually connected with your workforce.

The biggest asset that we have today is not the human workforce that works for us but the emotions that drive that human workforce to work for us. So, create a workplace that encourages the sharing of emotions / feelings/ deep thoughts. Engage with staff for personal and non-professional chats. Instead of creating an organization, create a familial symbiotic relationship so that each member is in sync with teammates and the organizational machinery runs like a well-oiled engine.

Most organizations believe in their employees and in their potential to deliver. Many even handhold them through difficult moments / transitions and spend bucket loads of money on their training / learning/ development schedules.  However, all this is an exercise in futility if the opportunity to engage with the employee on a humane front is lost and that I feel is the essence of minimizing attrition at the workplace.
